Not surprisingly, the official definition of astrology is disappointing to say the least.

The seemingly innocent words “supposed influences” smuggle in an entire worldview. A physicalist worldview that cannot get past the boring confines of measurable causes and effects.
And then comes the second definition: the safe territory of astronomy, the respectable sibling that grew up to become a “true scientist.” Translating our heavenly writing into mathematical equations. Impressive. But then what? Is that how exciting it gets?
Somewhere along the way, astrology was dismembered and dissected. In the same way as everything else in nature gets mutilated, including our abilities as human beings.
Astrologers know better. There’s something more going on, beyond what is measurable. Although, to be fair, we don’t all agree on what that “something more” actually is.
That’s what this episode is about.
I talk about what astrology means to me, based on conversations I had with some of my students. Studying Hellenistic techniques sometimes gets a little overwhelming, but astrology is not mainly about collecting more techniques, memorizing more rules, exceptions, or finding the perfect timing methods. It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that becoming a better astrologer simply means knowing and memorizing more.
I think the real (ongoing) work begins after you put down the books, and you realize astrology is a living doorway into something stranger, more intelligent, and far more intimate than you first imagined.
